Canada Steamship Lines hailing the captain and crew of one of its bulk carriers for rescuing two people in the waters of Lake Ontario.
The company says the crew notified Captain Wilson Walters of the CSL Welland they had spotted two objects in the water about 30 km from Niagara on the Lake last Saturday.
When the ship got closer they determined it was two people.
The captain alerted the coast guard and launched emergency manoeuvres to attempt to rescue the pair.
The crew made contact with a small fishing boat in the area that pulled the first person from the water.
Then the CSL Welland dropped its own rescue boat and pulled a second person to safety.
Unfortunately the person rescued by the fishing boat did not survive.
The second victim was taken to hospital, no word on their condition.
