The future of the former GM property on Ontario Street in St. Catharines is up in the air again.
In an email obtained by CKTB to city councillors, Mayor Walter Sendzik says he was contacted by the owner of Losani homes who had been actively engaged in pursuing puchase of the property to advise they have decided not to proceed with the purchase.
Sendzik's email suggests the current COVID-19 situation impacting the economy, was a factor but said the lack of certainty around the City's Community Improvement Program was also a reason the company opted not to move forward.
As a result, Sendzik has asked the City's Chief Administrative Officer and Director of Planning to review the status of the draft CIP proposal that staff have been developing, saying the CIP will be a key piece in any future interests in the property.
He's hopeful that when we emerge from the current pandemic, another developer will come forward for the old GM site.
