As residents celebrate the announcement of a new Costco for Niagara Falls, politicians are looking at infrastructure in the area.
Yesterday we learned a new Costco with a full gas bar will be opening in Niagara Square by 2020.
The popular stores have become almost infamous for packed parking lots and busy road ways.
Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati says the region has to get ready to handle the increased traffic.
"The Ministry of Transportation just rebuild the overpass. They put a bunch of extra turning lanes and on ramps and off ramps. So they're preparing for the volume that's about to hit that area. Now we have to make sure the arterial roads, like McLeod Road, are also up to snuff."
Over the weekend Niagara's second legal recreational cannabis store opened up in Niagara Square.
Diodati hopes the new retailers will attract even more businesses.
"We had the Choom grand opening on Saturday morning and the place was lined up around the building. And with Costco coming, it'll be the same kind of impact and it's going to change. And they're going to attract a bunch of new vendors and I think it's going to be a new age for the Niagara Square."
