The Lord Mayor of Niagara-On-The-Lake is weighing in the ongoing protests in the town.
For months now, protesters from the group At War For Animals Niagara have been demonstrating against the popular horse carriages, saying the tourist attraction represents systemic oppression of nonhuman species.
During a council meeting, Niagara Regional Police officials addressed the friction between the protesters and residents of the area, noting the protesters are operating within their Charter rights.
In a statement Lord Mayor Betty Disero says town staff are working with the police to research the municipality's rights, and are trying to ensure the situation remains peaceful.
The statement from the Lord Mayor also says she shares the community's frustrations and "the horse and carriage rides are a beautiful part of our heritage and present culture."
On Saturday, a group of carriage supporters will be marking International Carriage Horse Support Day in the town.
