As we hear word of another black discharge from the Niagara Falls, New York water treatment plant, up the highway, residents in a Hamilton neighbourhood are upset over the latest release of a black plume of particulate released by Dofasco.
Environment Hamilton executive director, Lynda Lukasik tells the CBC she noticed the cloud Sunday as it wafted across several neighbourhoods.
ArcelorMittal Dofasco's manager of corporate affairs, Marie Verdun, says its a process known as coffining when there is more molten iron produced than can be accepted by steelmaking and has to be otherwise dealt with.
Verdun adds the heavy rain also complicated matters.
But she adds the health risk from the cloud is low.
Environment Hamilton has filed a formal complaint with the Ministry of Environment.
