Organizers are overwhelmed with donations for migrant workers who have lost everything after a tragic fire at a St. Catharines flower farm.
The folks at Hernder Estate Winery have been collecting donations of clothing and toiletries since the fire broke out at Pioneer Flower Farm Friday night, destroying several buildings including the migrant workers' living quarters.
Angel Hernder says she put the call out online for donations not knowing what kind of response she would get. Then it went totally viral.
Hernder went out Sunday morning to get a van ready, and when she returned there were about seven people already lined up to donate.
From then on it was a non-stop lineup of community members stopping by with donations of clothes and other necessities.
Hernder says some people even went shopping and bought brand new stuff.
This morning, representatives for the winery tweeted out their thanks, but say the family wants to put all donations on hold for the moment while they sort through the massive outpouring of support.
So far more than three cargo vans have been filled with clothing, and more than $5,000 has been raised through a GoFundMe campaign.
They say anything above and beyond will go to Community Care.
Fire crews from across Niagara were on scene throughout the weekend, battling the blaze and putting out hotspots.
Miraculously, no one was hurt.
