Ontario PC Leader Doug Ford stands by his statement to 'review' plans to bring year round Go Train service to Niagara.
In a statement to CKTB News Melissa Lantsman, PC spokesperson for Doug Ford, says, "Doug Ford has spent his whole political career fighting for transit and infrastructure projects that get people moving and alleviate congestion.
He will review this project and consult with the people of Niagara before making a final announcement. We will have more to say on this in the coming weeks, but the people of Niagara should not be worried. Stay tuned.
The Liberals have had 15 years and still haven't delivered on this project. Go Expansion has been met with delay after delay. We can't trust them to get this done."
Doubt began to fly about the future of Niagara Go Trains after Ford would not fully commit to the project during a stop in Niagara this week, saying that he wasn't ruling it out, but wanted to 'review' the project.
However, not everyone agreed; Niagara Regional Councillor for Grimsby Tony Quirk joined Niagara In the Morning's Roundtable yesterday, saying, "I think it would probably be more irresponsible for the new leader to come forward saying, 'We're going to do this, this, and this' and tell everyone what they want to hear and then get in there and find out, woah, we can't actually do it because we don't have the money we thought we did. We don't have the finances we were expecting." Quirk says he believes Go Trains will still arrive in Niagara on schedule.
Ontario's Minister of Transportation Kathryn McGarry also worried for the future of the project believing when Ford says 'review' he really means 'cut': "We know that he has billions of dollars of cuts that he's looking at doing and I think this is one of those services. This isn't progress. I think the people of Niagara deserve more."
