Some troubling statistics with the number of drownings in Ontario up over the same time last year.
According to preliminary numbers from the Lifesaving Society, 54 people have drowned so far this year.
That's six more than in 2016 at this time.
Over the weekend, a pair of Collingwood men in their 20's drowned while swimming in a river near Wasaga Beach.
Last week, a young Toronto high school student drowned in Algonquin Park.
Last month a Pickering man drowned while swimming at Sherkston Shores.
Barbara Byers, with theĀ Lifesaving Society tells the CBC "A drowning can happen in seconds, and it's silent. Someone screaming for help as they slip beneath the water is 'very Hollywood."
Byers adds its very important for swimmers to be self-aware about their capabilities.
She says don't push your boundaries, especially if you're an inexperienced swimmer.
