A trial in Sudbury has been told that former N-D-P M-P Glenn Thibeault asked for paid jobs for constituency office staffers in exchange for running for the Liberals in a provincial
byelection.
Federal prosecutor David McKercher says in his opening statement that Thibeault also wanted income replacement for himself and full support of the Ontario Liberals.
Two Liberal party members are accused under the Election Act of offering another candidate a job or appointment to get him to step aside for Thibeault, who was Premier Kathleen
Wynne's preferred candidate in the 2015 Sudbury byelection.
Both Pat Sorbara and Gerry Lougheed have pleaded not guilty.
Thibeault -- who is not charged -- has previously denied he sought anything that would be seen as a bribe in exchange for running.
