It won't be a full service hospital but the Mayor of Welland says it's an encouraging sign progress is being made in the fight to save Welland General.
Niagara Health System CFO Angela Zangari says they are now considering keeping a 24 hour emergency department in Welland as well as a number of other services.
Welland general was slated to close when the province gave the green light to build a new South Niagara hospital in Niagara Falls.
Zangari says under the new proposal Welland's hospital would also be home to outpatient surgical services, mental health and addiction services as well as dialysis and breast screening, to name a few.
