Hamilton Fire has released the following statement:
This afternoon at approximately 1:39 p.m. Hamilton Fire received a report of a structure fire at 684 Mud Street East (the former Stoney Airport). First arriving crews reported a fully involved structure fire. The alarm was quickly upgraded, this included additional tankers given that the are no hydrants in the area. Mutual Aid was also requested from West Lincoln for tankers. The structure involved was approximately 100 feet by 40 feet, one storey, steel clad barn style construction. At the time of the fire there were two people inside the building. They heard a noise from the oil furnace and then observed flames, they tried to extinguish the fire with fire extinguishers but were not successful. The two exited the building. The building is a total loss. At the time of the fire it is our understanding that there were approximately 15-18 cars inside the building and another 6 outside the building that have been heavily damaged/destroyed. There was a second building directly to the north of the fire building within 4 to 6 feet that firefighters were able to save due to their immediate and aggressive firefighting efforts. Firefighters will be on the scene well into the night putting out spot fires and hot spots. At this time there are no injuries reported. The Ontario Fire Marshals Office has been notified and will be responding to work in conjunction with Hamilton Fire and the Hamilton Police Services to determine cause. No dollar loss is currently available.
