The UK's Information Commissioner’s Office has handed Facebook the maximum possible fine for its part in the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
In a statement, the ICO says Facebook is being fined '£500,000 for serious breaches of data protection law.'
In Canadian dollars, the fine works out to about $842,451.
The ICO's investigation revealed that between 2007 - 2015 Facebook allowed users' personal information to be accessed by app developers without informed consent.
Some users who had not downloaded the app were also impacted because they were 'friends' with people who had.
A developer was able to access the Facebook data of up to 87 million people worldwide, at least one million users in the UK, and shared that information with other groups including SCL Group, the parent company of Cambridge Analytica.
