No one was hurt after an early morning fire in Welland.
The fire department arrived at the home on Bellvue Court with six trucks after getting the call around 3:05 this morning. The blaze was contained to the basement where a load of laundry had been tossed into the dryer before the family went to bed.
Deputy Fire Chief Adam Eckhart says the entire family and their dog made it out of the house safely thanks in part to an education initiative.
"Our crews had attended the residence early in February of this year and made the recommendation to the homeowner to replace the alarms because they had exceeded the ten year life expectancy and the homeowner took the initiative and immediately replaced the alarms. Here we are in August of the same year and that same man was awoken by those alarms."
Damage is pegged at around $15 000. The family is returning to the home after being displaced last night.
