The federal government is putting $320,000 towards a local program helping female survivors of violence.
The Shape Your Life non-contact boxing program will expand into Niagara and Edmonton thanks to the funding boost from the Public Health Agency of Canada.
The program helps youth between the ages of 13 - 18 who have experienced family violence.
More than $1.3 millionĀ in federal funding was announced yesterday for programs to help prevent child maltreatment and support young survivors of family violence.
A Brock University team will be overseeing the local aspect of the program.
"I'm really excited for the next phase of Shape Your Life, which will provide us with the opportunity to leave a legacy in the communities we are collaborating with," Professor of Kinesiology Cathy van Ingen says via a release.
She adds, "As we are increasing capacity amongst coaches to better serve young people who have experienced trauma and violence, we hope to leave a sustainable legacy of trained individuals who can continue this much needed-work long after the completion of this project."
