The federal government is working on a contact tracing app to aid in the ongoing battle against COVID-19.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a voluntary app is being developed by Shopify, Blackberry, and the Ontario government.
Once the app is downloaded, a user will get a notification if they have come into close contact with someone who has reported a positive case of COVID-19 and also uses the app.
"It's something you can just download and forget about," Trudeau says adding it will not include location or geo-tagging 'of any sort.'
Trudeau says testing will start in Ontario soon with a larger roll-out in July.
The app's effectiveness will be largely dependent on how many Canadians choose to participate. Other areas that have taken a similar approach have struggled to get citizens to opt in due to privacy concerns.
Almost a month ago the Prime Minister said an app capable of tracking the spread of COVID-19 was necessary to allow people to move around freely again.
Premier Doug Ford is expected to have more to say about the app during a conference at 1 p.m.
More than 100,000 cases of COVID-19 have been reported nationwide.
