Niagara Regional Police put the revamped impaired driving laws into effect last night during Festive RIDE checks in Grimsby and Welland.
Around 800 drivers passed through the checkpoint, with only a few admitting to have a drink during the course of the evening.
As of midnight yesterday, police are also able to demand a breath sample from any driver they lawfully stop.
Officers chose 85 drivers for random checks - two of those drivers blew at a warning level and received 3 day suspensions.
A dozen traffic tickets were also handed out, including one motorist who was driving while under a suspension.
