The Fire Chief of Port Colborne is expressing his frustration.
Yesterday we learned that the owner of a Nickel Street home where four people died in a tragic blaze has been convicted under the fire code for not maininting the smoke alarms
Tom Cartwright commenting on the lack of compliance.
He says it's frustrating for him, and his firefighters, when they go to a home and found out it isn't compliant.
Cartwright says there's no reason for it, that they're willing to come to resident's home 24 hours a day to help with fire prevention.
"This tragic event will have an everlasting effect on the families, friends, and emergency response personnel involved, as well as our community as a whole" says Cartwright in a press release.
"Our community must make every effort to live a fire safe life"
The owner of the home, Nelly Engelage, was fined over $100,000, and convicted on two counts in Provincial Offences Court for failing to comply with the Ontario Fire Code.
It was back in December of 2016 a tragic fire swept through the two-storey home killing 37 year old Tammy Burd, her children, 15-year-old old Samantha Zuvic and two-year-old Joshua Zuvic, and her grandmother.
Burd's husband and an uncle, who also lived in the home, managed to escape the flames.
