A smoke and carbon monoxide alarm campaign in Port Colborne is paying off as five people were able to safely escape from a house fire.
Crews arrived at Louis Street just after 10 p.m. on Sunday night and were able to wrap things up in just under two hours.
Port Colborne Fire Deputy Chief Mike Bendia tells the Welland Tribune everyone was able to get out of the rental property safely because the smoke alarms were working.
The fire was contained to a bathroom on the second floor, and although there's no official word on the cause Bendia says they believe it was an accident.
The paper reports a damage estimate at between $75,00 and $100,000 dollars.
