Ontario Premier Doug Ford has ordered the Ontario Legislature to sit on Saturday in an attempt to speed up passage of its controversial bill to slash the size of Toronto city council.
A confidential email was sent to PC MPP's last night ordering them back to the legislature Saturday at 1 p.m. to speed up debate on Bill 31, dubbed the Efficient Local Government Act.
The bill re-introduces legislation that was struck down by an Ontario judge as a violation of the charter rights of voters and candidates in the upcoming Municipal election set for October 22nd.
The new legislation invokes the nothwithstanding clause to override that court decision.
It's the first time an Ontario government has ever taken the measure.
Yesterday, Toronto's city clerk Ulli Watkiss stated every delay in the battle between the province and city is affecting her ability to ensure a fair vote in October.
