A jockey, originally from Fort Erie, is in serious but stable condition at a hospital in Tampa, Florida.
Bryce Alderson was injuried Dec. 21 during the fourth race at Tampa Bay Downs.
A news release from the racing facility says the 24-year-old was thrown to the ground after a horse drifted in front of his horse, causing his horse to clip heels and throw the rider to the turf.
He was then kicked in the head by another horse while he was on the ground.
A GoFundMe page has been created at www.gofundme.com/2ksaeb4p to help offset medical costs as well as to support his wife, Caitlin.
She is by his side while family in Fort Erie care for their three-year-old daughter.
Alderson won his first race at Fort Erie Race Track in 2011 on Kinshasa's Paradis. Alderson has ridden 55 winners in his short career.
