High school students are being reminded that beaches in Niagara are closed as we approach 'Beach Day.'
Traditionally, students would skip school on the first Friday in June and head to the beach.
Even though young people haven't been in class for months now, officials are reminding them the beaches are still closed due to the pandemic.
Fort Erie officials say bylaw officers will be patrolling the areas on Friday to ensure everyone is following the pandemic protocols.
Anyone caught flouting the rules could be hit with a $750 fine.
"The Town of Fort Erie has decided to keep the beaches closed to help keep our community safe and to prevent the spread of COVID-19. People must follow these rules so that we can move through this pandemic, and hopefully remove these restrictions at some point in the future. ‘Beach day’ is no exception to this rule," Chief Administrative Officer Tom Kuchyt says.
Last week, St. Catharines Mayor Walter Sendzik expressed his disappointment after a group of people defied the closures and gathered for a party on the beach.
