This Saturday marks Laura Secord Day.
Niagara Parks is offering free admission to the Laura Secord Homestead in Queenston to mark the occasion from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Officials say the day is meant to recognize the accomplishments of Laura Secord and her place within the broader Canadian narrative.
There will also be a Laura Secord Hike, offered by the Niagara Bruce Trail Club, taking place on Saturday, June 17, along the 32 kilometre Laura Secord Legacy Trail.
The hike will be a modern-day approximation of Laura Secord’s heroic trek across the rugged Niagara terrain to warn the British of an impending American invasion, a key turning point in the War of 1812.
Beginning at approximately 6:30 a.m. at Laura Secord Homestead, the walk is expected to take around five to seven hours to complete and will conclude at historic Decew House Heritage Park in Thorold.
The Laura Secord Hike offers participants the opportunity to fully appreciate and connect to the famous history of Laura Secord and her crucial role in the War of 1812.
Niagara Parks’ Niagara-on-the-Lake WEGO shuttle provides service to Laura Secord’s Homestead, departing northbound from the Floral Clock every 60 minutes, from 10:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. and from Fort George, southbound every 60 minutes, from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Laura Secord died in 1868 at the age of 93 in Chippawa.
