The government is putting forth $8.4 million in funding to establish the Canadian Grape and Wine Science Cluster.
The cluster will involve university researchers, grape growers, and partners from Ontario, BC, Quebec, and Nova Scotia.
The Canadian Grapevine Certification Network will be overseeing the cluster.
Brock University will also play a key role with the Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute taking the lead on research in Ontario.
The Brock research will focus on understanding the impact and management of grapevine diseases in Ontario, improving red wine quality and consumer acceptance through CCOVI's TanninAlert program, Grapevine cold hardiness evaluation, improving sparkling and still wine quality with natural Canadian indigenous yeast, and vineyard pest management.
The grape and wine industry will also be contributing $3.7 million in cash and in-kind donations.
