The Green Party has officially announced its by-election candidate for Niagara West-Glanbrook.
Green Party of Ontario leader Mike Schreiner says Donna Cridland will run in the November 17th by-election.
“Our GPO candidates offer a positive alternative to the broken status quo,” says Schreiner.
Cridland has retired from a career in banking, but still volunteers for several organizations.
She lives with her partner of almost 40 years, Joan.
Schreiner says she’s a strong advocate for healthy local food systems, environmental and economic sustainability, as well as social justice issues.
Meantime, the provincial by election race in Niagara West-Glanbrook could be one for the history books.
In a shocking win, members of the local Tory riding association selected a 19 year old Brock University student to represent the party in the race.
Sam Oosterhoff beat out two veteran politicians on the weekend, former St Catharines MP Rick Dykstra who is the head of the Ontario Progressive Conservative party and Grimsby regional Councillor Tony Quirk.
This is Dykstra's second major loss in about a year, after he lost his federal seat to Liberal Chris Bittle.
In a vote yesterday, NDP party members selected Michael Thomas, the former head of the Hamilton Police Association, as their candidate.
Oosterhoff and Thomas face off against lawyer Vicki Ringuette for the Liberals and Donna Cridland for the Green party.
