After raising more than $62,000 in a crowdfunding campaign to pay for a legal challenge, a group calling itself One Public Education Now or OPEN, has hired a law firm to spearhead a constitutional challenge over the funding of Catholic schools in Ontario.
OPEN contends the funding of separate schools violates the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms which prohibits discrimination of religion.
The legal challenge will ask the Supreme Court to reconsider a 1987 decision that found Charter Rights do not apply to the funding of Ontario separate schools.
The group notes polls consistently show a solid majority of Ontarians oppose public funding of Catholic schools.
