A movement to improve the safety of workers at thousands of nail salons across the U-S is gaining steam.
The movement began in California with a failed effort in 2005 to ban some industrial compounds used to make mani-pedis look prettier and last longer.
Since then the U-S Environmental Protection Agency has hopped on the bandwagon and New York state has moved to make it mandatory for nail salons to have ventilation systems to protect workers from the toxic fumes.
Beauty product trade groups and chemical makers deny the ingredients including formaldehyde and other chemicals known or believed to cause cancer or other harm, are dangerous at the levels used in nail products.
There are more than 400 thousand nail salon workers in the U-S mostly immigrants from Asian countries.
