Hamilton is dropping neighbourhood speed limits to 40 kilometres per hour across the city starting this fall.
The default 40 km/h limit will apply to all local streets and "minor collectors" with signs posted around the city to note the limit.
The city-wide change will also cut max speeds to 30 km/h on local streets near schools.
City staff says the change is meant to address concerns about chronic speeding and aggressive driving.
The fines could end up being costly for speeders as driving 20 km/h over the limit rather than 10 over is $95 instead of $40.
