Niagara Falls city council have voted to remove the historical designation of a property at 7565 Lundy's Lane.
The 104-year-old building that was originally a schoolhouse back in 1915 will now be demolished.
Council's move to revoke heritage status and tear down the building has some scratching their heads, as it was also city council who gave the historical designation back in 2009.
Niagara Falls City Councillor Victor Pietrangelo was one of only 2 councillors who voted against the demolition.
He joined CKTB and said the building "definitely could have been saved".
Pietrangelo says council had a few options on the table, including selling it or using it for municipal purposes.
Now some residents might have questions about the future of other buildings that have been given historical designations.
Pietrangelo says he worries that council's decision to remove the designation and demolish the building is sending the wrong message.
The building has been vacant since 2005 and extensive work is needed to salvage the inside of the asbestos and mold-laden propety.
There is a petition to save the building. You can find it here:
