St. Catharines Council has supported a petition to hold elected officials to a higher standard when it comes to racism and discrimination.
Last night, former regional council candidate Mo Al Julmaily brought forward the petition to make it an offence for officials to use their position to promote discrimination.
Councillor Greg Miller brought forward a motion to support the petition.
"What this would do is petition the federal government to basically institute some sort of recall legislation like they have in The States where citizens can say, 'We can't tolerate this, we can't wait until the next election to maybe have this person voted out of office. We want the opportunity to do this now.'"
Miller tells CKTB News it's important to call out hate speech and racism where it exists.
"It's saying we as a council are sort of standing up to racism and hate speech and those things that unfortunately many politicians in Canada and across the world as starting to trade in."
The petition has also been supported by councils in the City of Welland and the Niagara Region.
