The holiday season is upon us and your local fire department wants everyone to stay safe.
Charles Turpin, Fire Prevention Officer in Port Colborne says the holiday's can be a time of distraction and can lead to devastating consequences when it comes to fire.
"Typically people are distracted during the holiday's and let their guard down, it's one of the most dangerous times as you might have a drink or two, leave a pot on the stove, leave a cigarette burning, and it leads to higher death due to fire"
Turpin says a lot of the safety reminders are common sense.
Keep your electrical cords in good condition, keep your real trees well watered and away from heat sources, and when it comes to candles make sure pets and children can't knock them over.
Turpin says a real tree can drink up to 4 litres of water a day and it's important to keep it moist and away from heat sources.
Turpin adds it's always a good time to double check your smoke detectors.
