Hundreds of residents from across Niagara gathered in St. Catharines Tuesday night to send a message of solidarity in the wake of the tragic shooting at a mosque in Quebec City.
Crowds gathered in front of St. Catharines City Hall, then marched to the Masjid Al Noor mosque on Geneva street.
Addressing the crowd, St. Catharines Mayor Walter Sendzik said "know that we are hand in hand with our Muslim brothers and sisters, know that we will rise above the darkness."
Evening prayers were led by a local Imam on the front lawn of City Hall as the vigil got underway.
The crowd then walked along Church street to the Majid An-Noor mosque and the back parking lot where it heard from more community leaders.
St. Catharines MP Chris Bittle said "this brutal act seeks to make us fear our places of worship, we must respond and it starts today"
