Snow, ice, freezing temperatures and now the ice boom in Lake Erie are proof winter has arrived.
Crews in Buffalo hauled out the ice boom over the weekend, in an annual task shared by Ontario and New York state.
It involves placing nearly three-kilometres of barrier at the mouth of Lake Erie where it flows into the Niagara River.
The aim is to hold back the flow of ice from the lake into the river, where it can jam up and reduce the water flow needed for hydro-electric power.
The ice boom was first installed in 1964.
