On January 28th, the IceDogs were a shot away from a record setting third 3 in 3 weekend sweep but it was not to be, losing in a North Bay shootout. Since then, the team has gone winless in ten including a Monday afternoon overtime loss in Peterborough 4-3.
Akil Thomas scored the first of two against the Petes a little more than 13 minutes in. Kirill Maksimov stripped the puck from a Petes defender at their blueline to grab the only assist. The lead last just over a minute before thing were even in a period where the IceDogs were outshot 12-9.
Two goals exactly four minutes apart before the game’s mid-way mark gave Peterborough a 3-1 advantage. Colton Incze made same tough saves in period two as his side was doubled 10-5 on the shot clock. The fifth shot would be the charm as Sam Mileitc notched his 29th at 19:36 on a right wing power move around the defence and the netminder to tuck it in on the forehand.
In the third Billy Burke’s team put on the pressure and were finally rewarded with 5:08 to go as Thomas banged home his 18th on a Johnny Corneil feed in close. The advantage shots wise was 13-5 but Colton Incze had to be strong late to foil a Petes breakaway as the game went to overtime.
In the extra period, the only shot from the left side would be the winner and give the home side the extra point.
The ‘Dogs continue to hold second in the Central with another 3 in 3 coming up beginning Thursday.
