The IceDogs fell behind 6-2 in the third period and staged a furious comeback only to fall a goal short losing 6-5 in Ottawa. Sam Miletic, the OHL’s Player of the Month for January notched his 25th of the year in the loss.
The ‘Dogs got behind early, 79 seconds into the contest, before Elijah Roberts evened the score with his 7th on a high slot deflection off a Ben Jones left point shot at 5:18. A late goal gave the 67’s the lead as the IceDogs knocked the puck into their own net.
After Ottawa extended the lead to 3-1, Billy Constantinou snapped home his 3rd on an unassisted effort at 9:44. Two goals in 58 seconds would send Ottawa to the dressing room up 5-2 after two. After forty, Ottawa had 26 shots compared to 16 IceDogs attempts.
A short-handed marker extended the lead as Stephen Dhillon would leave the game after being crashed into on the 6th Ottawa goal. That’s when the Niagara offense went to work, Johnny Corneil hit for his 15th at 2:16 from Oliver Castleman and Liam Ham. A second man advantage goal from Akil Thomas 1:20 later brought the visitors closer. Dan Singer and Kirill Maksimov added assists. With Colton Incze on the bench for a 6th attacker, Sam Miletic converted a rebound off a Willie Lockhead shot with 1:27 left but Billy Burke’s team could get no closed. In the third, the ‘Dogs recorded 20 shots, compared to just 6 from the home side.
The IceDogs remain atop the Central Division heading into Satruday’s action.
