A new crop of IceDogs will be selected Saturday beginning at 9am as the 2017 OHL Priority Selection Draft takes place. The IceDogs will select 5th,in a draft that will be headed for the first time by a management team directed by Head Coach David Bell and Director of Player Personal Joey Burke.
A year ago Niagara selected 12th in the opening round and chose Akil Thomas. Thomas responded with 21 goals and 27 assists in his rookie year, good enough to be a serious candidate for OHL rookie of the year. Other notable IceDogs first round picks include Freddie Hamilton and Aaron Haydon. Barrie will choose first overall and will announce their selection Friday night.
The IceDogs, having finished the 2016-2017 season with the youngest team in the CHL, have all but three overagers eligible to return for next season and will begin the 2017-2018 campaign with only one "OA" player on the roster.
