Johnny Corneil scored the winner early in the third as the IceDogs outlasted Sudbury 3-1. The victory moves the Dogs ahead of the Wolves in the OHL's Central Division into second place.
A physical, hard hitting affair began with the IceDogs having numerous first period power-plays. The home side held a 17-5 shots advantage after one in a scoreless opening twenty.
Sudbury capitalized on their first man advantage in the second but Ryan Mantha's unassisted 7th late in the middle period tied the score at 1-1.
Corneil's game winner came early in the third as he converted a rebound for his 7th, with the assists going to Ben Jones and Aaron Haydon. Kyle Langdon closed out the scoring into the empty net late.
Stephen Dhillon stopped 31 for the win. St Catharines own Zack Bowman faced 42 IceDogs shots in the Wolves net. Round two of this weekend rivalry will take place Sunday afternoon in Sudbury.
