After receiving legal advice, the City of Port Colborne and it's fire department have decided to release the name of the owner of the Nickel Street home that was the scene of a deadly fire in December of 2016.
Earlier this week, Mrs. Nelly Engelage, the owner of 53 Nickel Street, was convicted on two counts of failing to comply with the Ontario Fire Code and was fined $100,000.
The charges came after the blaze claimed the life of Tammy Burd, her two children and her grandmother.
Fire officials later determined the owner of the home failed to maintain the smoke alarms and test them annually.
Port Colborne Fire Chief Tom Cartwright reminds all residents and owners of buildings in Port Colborne of their responsibilities under the Ontario Fire Code.
Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms must be installed and maintained.
