The rules of the road are about to get tougher on impaired drivers.
Stricter laws are coming into effect today, giving police officers the ability to demand a roadside breath sample to any driver they stop - even if they do not suspect the person has been drinking.
Up until now, officers needed to have a reasonable suspicion that the driver had alcohol in their system.
Higher minimum and maximum penalties are also coming into effect today - a first offence with a blood alcohol content between 80 - 119 mg will now carry a minimum $1,000 fine.
Alcohol-impaired driving that does not cause bodily harm or death - mandatory minimum penalties:
Between January 1st and mid-November of this year, the OPP have laid more than 7,300 impaired driving charges.
