Hurricane Irma is getting weaker as it moves over the western Florida peninsula this morning.
Irma hit Florida yesterday as a powerful Category 4 hurricane, hammering much of the state with roof-ripping winds, gushing floodwaters and widespread power outages.
By this morning, Irma had weakened to a Category 1 hurricane with winds near 135 kmh.
Irma is expected to become a tropical storm over northern Florida or southern Georgia later today.
Meantime, the federal government has set the wheels in motion on helping those in the Caribbean who have been affected by hurricane Irma.
The government is sending a team to the region to determine what Canada could provide in terms of humanitarian aid.
One option for the government is to use its Disaster Assistance Response Team, which can rapidly deploy anywhere in the world.
