St. Catharines Council is recognizing a group of lifeguards for decisive quick thinking that likely spared swimmers from some serious injuries.
At last night's meeting Mayor Walter Sendzik handed out certificates of appreciation to seven lifeguards who cleared the Kiwanis Aquatics Centre pool before a portion of the roof came crashing down in July.
Council listened raptly as acting manger of programs and culture services Lori Mambella detailed the subtle signs of danger that could have easily been ignored - a fallen bolt, and an eerie sound overhead.
Thankfully the lifeguards did not ignore the warning signs and sprang into action.
The Aquatics Centre has been closed since the July 4th incident as repair work continues. The last official update says they hope to reopen in time for September programming.
