Niagara remains under a heat warning and the Ontario SPCA is asking you to keep your pets safe.
Senior Manager of Animal Protection with the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society Bonnie Bishop says a dog's normal body temperature is already 39 degrees and they can only withstand a temperature of 41 for minutes.
Today's high is 34 but it will feel like 44.
She says animals have a limited ability to sweat so it's life threatening for them to be in hot temperatures for just a few minutes.
Parked cars can quickly reach deadly temperatures, even on relatively mild days with the car parked in the shade and the windows slightly open.
She says pets should only be left outdoors for short periods, should have sufficient water and a cool, sheltered place out of direct sun.
Don’t leave pets outside for too long. If possible, avoid going outside when temperatures are at their highest.
If you observe an animal suffering in the heat, call 1-833-9ANIMAL (1-833-926-4625).
