Brock University is kicking off a new lecture series in honour of a student who was killed while trying to come to the aid of an older man outside a Hamilton Mosque.
The Yosif Al-Hasnawi Memorial Lecture Series will be exploring how racism and xenophobia can affect access to health care.
Tomorrow, the Director of Public Policy for the Canadian Mental Health Association Ontario will speak about promoting racial justice in health care.
Yosif Al-Hasnawi was a first year Medical Sciences student who dreamed of being a doctor.
He was shot and killed last December while trying to come to the aid of an older man who was being harassed.
Two paramedics dispatched to the scene after the shooting are charged with failing to provide the necessities of life after witnesses claimed they took too long to treat Al-Hasnawi and even accused him of exaggerating the extent of his injuries.
Meanwhile, 19 year old Dale Burningsky King is charged with second degree murder and 20 year old James Matheson is facing a charge of obstruction of justice.
The free lecture tomorrow will be held in the South Block 203 beginning at 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. It is open to the general public.
