The Trudeau Liberals have picked up a parliamentary seat in a region of Quebec they haven't held since 1980.
Liberal Richard Hebert, a former mayor, won the riding of Lac-Saint-Jean in Quebec's nationalist heartland.
The seat had been held since 2007 by Conservative Denis Lebel until his retirement last spring, and before that, it was a Bloc Quebecois stronghold and home base of sovereigntist champion and Bloc founder Lucien Bouchard.
The Conservatives did manage to retain a Tory seat in Edmonton, with an easy victory by Dane Lloyd in the riding long held by the retiring Rona Ambrose.
