A local company is being tapped to build a new Niagara Regional Police building in St. Catharines.
The Corporate Services Committee has unanimously voted in favour of awarding the contract to Merit Contractors Niagara with the lowest bid of 16.7 million dollars.
St. Catharines Regional Councillor Kelly Edgar praised the company, saying he believes they will do a good job.
"I'm not really sure, I can't remember whether or not this project came in under budget, but I'm pretty sure it came in on time, and they were the ones who constructed the current St. Catharines Transit location, and they did a hell of a good job on that."
The Committee also approved a budget increase of 3.7 million dollars.
Part of that increase comes from the cost of remediation for a brownfield site on Welland Ave that will eventually house the new building.
