Reaction pouring in after word the federal government plans to launch a study on a potential ban on handguns and assault weapons.
The issue of gun control arose after the July 22nd mass shooting in Toronto's Greektown.
Both the cities of Toronto and Montreal petitioning Ottawa to consider banning handguns.
Border Security and Organized Crime Reduction Minister Bill Blair will lead the study.
St. Catharines Liberal MP Chris Bittle says the study will look at the pros and cons.
Bittle says while it might be politically beneficial to say we should ban a certain type of weapon, the study will ask the important question will a ban reduce crime?
If not, he fully expects Blair to report that to the Prime Minister.
The executive director of the Canadian Shooting Sports Association, Tony Bernardo, was quick to respond accusing the government of turning on two million law abiding citizens who own handguns who have done nothing wrong.
