"So far, so good." That is the message for local GM workers.
The company is expected to announce the upcoming closure of its plant in Oshawa this morning.
Greg Brady, President of Unifor Local 199, says that closure does not mean big changes in St. Catharines, "We do have some production that goes to Oshawa but not major volumes, so there is some, but nothing that will affect us dramatically right now." Brady adds, "I would say maybe 20% of our engines went to Oshawa but our main customer is Fort Worth in Texas."
Unifor officials have confirmed they learned no product has been allocated to the Oshawa Assembly Plant past December of 2019.
More than 2,500 people work at the Oshawa plant.
Unifor President Jerry Dias has tweeted out, "Unifor does not accept the GM Canada announcement that no product has been allotted to Oshawa past December 2019. We will fight for Unifor Local 222 members to keep these good paying jobs at Oshawa Assembly Plant."
