Niagara Regional Police are out with a public safety message about property crime including a reminder not to post on Facebook when you are going away.
Officials say while every community is faced with property related crimes that include theft, and break and enters, Niagara experienced 11,000 incidents in 2016.
Police say that their investigations show that many thefts from cars and homes are compounded by the property not being left locked and secured by the owner.
While a determined thief may cause damage to gain entry (break glass) many would rather quietly attempt to commit their crimes and move on.
The NRP is asking the public to report suspicious persons and incidents such as theft from automobiles.
Some property crime prevention tips include closing and locking home and car doors and not posting on social media when you away on vacation or showing off fancy new purchases.
Police are asking residents to take photos of your property (model/serial numbers), and room layouts when you buy a new large ticket item or every six months.
