The city of Welland has been given a huge donation to help with the International Canoe Federation Canoe Polo World Championships this summer.
The provincial government has given the city $125,000 to help with the cost of administration, logistics, and execution for competition.
550 people from 26 countries will be competing in the Rose city from July 31st until August 5th.
This is the fifth major international flat water sports event to be hosted in Welland since 2012.
"Hosting elite competitions such as these definitely puts Welland in the spotlight, and also assists with gaining attention from other organizations," said Richard Dalton, Manager of Recreation and Culture. "It's our commitment to securing international events such as the Canoe Polo World Championships that provide the competitive advantage over other venues. This strong reputation has been a key factor in being selected as partner host of the 2021 Canada Summer Games."
