To mark the momentous occasion the final Nazi message decoded at the famous Bletchley Park has been released.
The message begins by reporting the arrival of British troops before reading, ‘Closing down for ever – all the best – goodbye.’
1.1 million Canadians served during the war and just over 44 thousand gave the ultimate sacrifice.
According to the St. Catharines Museum an estimated 4,000 men and 150 women from St. Catharines enlisted in the armed forces during WWII.
During the course of the war, 215 St. Catharines residents were killed. Their names can be found on two tablets on the entrance façade at City Hall.
