People are being asked to pause today and mark World Suicide Prevention Day.
According to a release from the International Association for Suicide Prevention, every year suicide is among the top 20 leading causes of death.
More than 800,000 people die by suicide each year and officials say at least 135 people are affected by the death in some way.
The International Association for Suicide Prevention asks people around the world to take part in the 'Light A Candle' event tonight. Participants are asked to light a candle near a window at 8 p.m. as a sign of support, and to remember a loved one.
Locally, support is available for adults through the Crisis Outreach and Support Team (COAST) at 1-866-550-5205.
Children and youth can contact Pathstone Mental Health's 24 hour Crisis Line at 1-800-263-4944.
In the event of an emergency or life threatening situation, always call 911.
